• Setting Your Starting Line

  A sweeper-keeper's starting position is set by the deepest defender and the ball's distance from goal, not by habit. As the last line steps up, the keeper steps up with them — usually level with the edge of the box against a mid-block, deeper against a team that likes balls in behind.

  Before committing to a through ball, a keeper checks three things fast: can I get there before the attacker, is a defender goal-side of them anyway, and what happens if I miss the ball completely. If any answer is uncertain, staying on the line and organising the defence is the safer call.

  Under a press, the keeper's first look is always the furthest safe option, not the nearest — a long switch to an unmarked fullback beats a short pass into a trap. Practise scanning before the ball arrives so the decision is already made by the time it does.
